Welcome to Art Supply Co: Where Every Tool Has a Story

You know that feeling when you pick up a new art supply and wonder where it came from? Not just which store shelf, but really came from—like, who invented washi tape, and why does it have that name? Or how did people make valentines before Hallmark existed?

Yeah, we wondered too.

That's why we started this blog.

We're Obsessed with the "Why" Behind What You Create With

Art Supply Co isn't your typical art supply blog. We're not here to show you the 47th tutorial on watercolor techniques (though we love those too). We're here because we believe every marker, every piece of specialty paper, every weird crafting tool in your drawer has a story worth telling.

And usually? That story is way cooler than you'd expect.

Take embroidery hoops. Seems simple, right? Just a wooden circle to hold fabric tight. But those hoops have a 600-year history involving medieval nobility, gold thread, and the evolution of decorative arts. Or collage—what started as a radical artistic rebellion by Picasso is now something your kid does with magazines and glue sticks.

That's the kind of stuff we're into.

What Makes Us Different

Most art blogs focus on how to use supplies. We focus on *why* they exist in the first place.

We dig into:

- The unexpected origins of everyday art materials

- Cultural movements that shaped the tools we use today

- Forgotten techniques that are making comebacks

- The makers and rebels who invented new ways to create

If it's non-traditional, has a weird history, or comes from a subculture that changed how we think about art and craft—we're writing about it.

Who This Blog Is For

You, if you:

- Get excited learning the backstory of random objects

- Love art, craft, DIY, or making stuff with your hands

- Appreciate when something "basic" turns out to have a fascinating past

- Want to understand the cultural context of what you're creating with

- Think punk rock, medieval tapestries, and Japanese paper-making all belong in the same conversation (because they do)

What to Expect

We're publishing new posts every other day, diving deep into one art supply, technique, or movement at a time. Some will be about materials you use every day. Others will introduce you to techniques you've never heard of but will immediately want to try.

Each post will give you:

- The real history (the weird, surprising parts included)

- How it evolved into what we use today

- Why it matters to makers and artists

- The tools and materials that make it possible

Let's Get Started

This is a new blog, which means we're building this thing in real time. We're going to explore zine culture, the revolution of washi tape, why Valentine's Day cards look the way they do, and so much more.

Every tool has a story. Every material has a past. Every creative movement started somewhere.

We're here to uncover all of it.

Stick around. This is going to be fun.
